Choosing the Perfect Seafood
Seafood can prove harmful to the human health if proper care is not taken while buying, cooking and consuming the seafood. There are some very basic things which need to be taken into consideration while dealing with seafood.
- Buy fresh seafood from reputed dealer who keep their products properly refrigerated and iced
- After the seafood is bought, put it in the fridge, ice or in the freezer immediately
- Seafood should be thoroughly cooked to an internal temperature of at least 145 F (63 C)
- People with chronic diseases like HIV, cancer or liver infection should avoid raw seafood. Some of the people with certain type of diseases should also take care because their medicines may put them at risk due to the contaminated seafood
- Don’t buy seafood where raw and cooked both are placed in the same place. Cross contamination may occur due to the juices that flow out of the raw seafood onto the cooked one
- Avoid buying frozen seafood where the packages is torn or crushed as it may lead to infections
- Do not buy seafood which has been frozen for too long or thawed and refrozen
- If the seafood is to be consumed after a couple of days, place it in the deepest part of the freezer and avoid clubbing it with other food items. Do not cramp it and allow free air flow around it
